Chuck Halvorson In the foundry business, most of the wood tooling projects were very intricate, with a tolerance of only a couple of thousandths of an inch and taking many hours to finish. After spending much time sanding and polishing, those perfect patterns would go out into the foundry. To my disappointment those beautiful pieces of wood art would then have sand dumped around them and squeezed to create a sand mold. This mold, would then be used to produce a master mold for future mass production. Leaving behind a wood mold that no longer shined with perfection. I am approaching the mid point of my life and I saw something that excited me. It was a guitar that was built by my nephew (Andy ( Halvy) Halvorson). It was absolutely gorgeous! His shop was a small spare room in a farm house he rented. Andy built this guitar completely from raw materials. It
had a mahogany body,
birdseye maple fret board, and a firgured maple top. The finish
was a beautiful bluish green color much like the carribbean
waters. It was very clear to me that Andy had a gift. In addition Andy is a self taught musician who currently performs with two local bands; ( Virginia Dare and Almost Everyone). I knew right then and there, that if we combined our talents that we could have something special. My beautiful pieces of wood would no longer have to be covered with sand. I no longer work at the foundry. All of my time is spent building and polishing beautiful pieces of art that will forever shine and bring beauty for others to enjoy. Our family has a long history of individuals with artistics talents. My great uncle, (Edwin Halvorson) was known throughtout the world as a master gunsmith. Edwin was quite unique, as he did his craft with no hands. Unbelievably, he could carve wood and etch steel using only his stubs. In addition, my paternal grandfather, George Kateley, was quite a musician and played in a band. Andy was lucky enough to inherit both of these talents. From this, Halvy Custom Creations was born. Our shop is located in the scenic bluffs of Southeastern Minnesota, outside the small town Houston. Guitars are our primary business, but in addition, we build beautiful wood funeral urns and inlay boxes, used for jewelry, memory boxes, storage boxes for i'pods, cell phones, t.v. remotes, etc,. Our goal for each Halvy custom project, is to build something that represents you. We want to bring your ideas to life. "A joke comes to mind!" What do you get when you cross a Norwegian, with a German, a gunsmith, and with a musician ? A Halvy Custom Creation! |
AndyHalvorson I was born , raised, and have lived my entire life in the small Southeastern Mn town of Houston. I had a very All -American upbringing. Since we were from such a small town, my friends and I played every sport imaginable, and even invented a few new ones. Sports and athletics were always number one to me growing up, and I always thought that I would spend my life pursuing them. In my freshman year of high school my body started to break down physically with knee and shoulder problems, and I realized that "Oh No" I might not be able to play football for the rest of my life. Music has always played a big role in my life. As fate would have it, I found out that pounding on the drums, playing guitar, or just dancing in the basement to dads old Credence records was much easier on my body than football. Like I said, I had a very All-American upbringing , and was fortunate to have two amazing parents that indulged all of my interests. My sister and I were given the opportunity and encouraged to pursue our creative side. I started out banging on a drum set , but knowing I had an interest in music, my mom went out and bought a brand new acoustic guitar for me. The guitar sat around for a few years, but as I began to dig deeper and deeper into the old classic rock and blues music that I loved, I knew I had to start playing it. I've never really had any interest in anything that I couldn't teach myself, so the first couple of years were spent in my bedroom learning every acoustic intro, solo, and chord progression to those songs I loved. I started with the intention of learning a few songs that I could enterain my friends with, or play around the campfire. As luck would have it, a local band (Virginia Dare), had just lost their lead guitarist, and happened to see me playing around the campfire one night at a graduation party. They asked me if I would be interested in playing with them, and even though I didn't have an electric guitar, I told them I would try. I went out and bought a new telecaster, and spent the next six months practicing solo's six hours a day. I was addicted and from there on my love of music just snowballed. Anything I've ever been intersted in becomes an obsession, and before long I needed to know the "how's" and "why's" of the electric guitar. Why does one pickup sound different than another one? Why does a certain type of wood sound different then another? I began building out of my bedroom and as I progressed as a player, I slowly started to put some ideas together. I knew I wasn't going to reinvent the wheel, but there were things I knew I could improve on that would make a guitar either more playable, sound better, or just plain prettier to look at. Soon after I started building, my uncle, Chuck (Tucker) saw one of my guitars and became very excited. Having 35 years of woodworking experience himself, I knew his contribution could be invaluable and we decided to start Halvy CustomCreations. Building one of a kind custom instruments and working with the customer to give them exactly what they want, has become our business. The appreciation and satisfaction from the people we have built guitars for has been the most rewarding part of all of this so far. As a guitar player there is nothing quite like playing an instrument that looks, feels and sounds like a part of you. "If your fingers start to bleed," You know you are on to something.
